Léon Bloy (1846-1917), a major author who is unjustly ignored. A fervent Catholic, author of two novels, several essays and a Diary spanning almost twenty years, Léon Bloy seems to be part of the 19th century that did not survive modernity? And yet, this outstanding polemicist and pamphleteer, who influenced writers such as Celine and Bernanos, speaks to our time and of our time. Among Bloy’s favourite subjects are the tireless insult of the rich and the bourgeois, the caricature of the successful and untalented authors of the day, the denunciation of false values and real compromises, the criticism of the reign of good conscience and hypocrisy, the radical refusal of material and mental comfort – all subjects that remain current.
